Homework is assigned Monday through Thursday in grades 1 through 6 to correspond with the Differentiated Instruction curriculum. Long-range projects and assignments may be given as well. The purpose of homework is to reinforce and/or extend the daily program. In addition, it is designed to promote responsibility, organizational skills, and good study habits.
The amount of homework given nightly varies from grade to grade but general guidelines are as follows:
Grades 1-3 30-45 minutes
Grades 4-6 1-1 ½ hours
Although these are general guidelines, more homework may result from long-range assignments/projects. Please contact the teacher directly if you notice that your child consistently completes homework in substantially more time.
If a child is not in school by noon, homework will be sent to the office. If the parent does not come to the school to get the homework, it will be sent back to the classroom. No phone calls to the office are necessary to ask for the homework.
Parents are expected to help with homework in the following ways:
1. Reserve a block of time for study.
2. Make sure that students have a room that is free of distractions. With distractions, homework can take substantially longer to complete.
3. Check to see that assignments are completed; SJN provides an assignment book.
4. Budget their time between extracurricular activities and school assignments.
5. Set goals and have reasonable expectations of your child.
